IEA BioenergyTechnology Collaboration Programme

Activities: Tasks

The work of IEA Bioenergy is structured in Tasks, which have well defined objectives, budgets and time frames.

How the IEA Bioenergy Tasks fit togetherFour nested rings, from Resources at the centre, through Conversion and Market and deployment, to System perspective. Each Task sits in the ring where it works; strategic projects sit between Tasks; dashed lines link Tasks and projects with other Technology Collaboration Programmes and TCP Coordination Groups.System perspectiveMarket and deploymentConversionResourcesBroadening the feedstock baseSocio-economic impactsSynergies H₂ & BioenergyBECCUSTASK 43Biomass supplyTASK 42BiorefiningTASK 32Combustion & emissionsTASK 34LiquefactionTASK 33GasificationTASK 37Anaerobic digestion / biogasTASK 36Waste & circular economyTASK 39Transport biofuelsTASK 45Climate & sustainabilityTASK 44Energy system / flexibilityTASK 40Biobased deployment & carbon management

The work of IEA Bioenergy is structured in a number of Tasks, which have well defined objectives, budgets, and time frames. The collaboration which earlier was focused on Research, Development and Demonstration is now increasingly also emphasising Deployment on a large-scale and worldwide. Each participating country pays a modest financial contribution toward administrative requirements, shares the costs of managing the Tasks and provides in-kind contributions to fund participation of national personnel in the Tasks. The scope of the work undertaken within IEA Bioenergy is shown in the graphic, along with the links with other Technology Collaboration Programmes (TCPs) and related Coordination Groups.

IEA Bioenergy Tasks

Each Task is led by one of the participating countries (Operating Agent) and is coordinated by a Task Leader. The work is directed by the Executive Committee. Currently, there are 11 Tasks. All of the Tasks have a common duration of three years. For an overview of the main activities and deliverables under the 11 Tasks in the current triennium, please see the Programme of Work and Budget 2025-2027.

How to find out more

IEA Bioenergy is keen to promote its work programmes within participating countries and to encourage increasing involvement of industrial partners. It also wishes to encourage further interest in its work from non-participating countries. All OECD countries are eligible to apply. In addition, the IEA Governing Board has decided that the Technology Collaboration Programmes may also be open to non-member countries. If you are interested in finding out more about IEA Bioenergy, please contact the Executive Committee Secretary.
